The Prussian State Railway developed the passenger train locomotive of type P 8 to meet the increased demands of passenger and express train traffic. By 1923, German manufacturers had already built more than 3,700 of these versatile, triple-coupled locomotives. The P 8 was a universally deployable locomotive, regularly seen hauling all categories of trains. After the turmoil of the two world wars, they served with almost all European railway administrations.
Poland received a total of 192 engines from Prussia's rolling stock after 1918. From the outset, they were the most important steam locomotives for local passenger transport for the PKP and were designated as the Class Ok1. Over the years, 429 locomotives of this class were used by the PKP.
