In 1943/44, the Société Alsacienne de Constructions Mécaniques (SACM) locomotive factory in Graffenstaden near Strasbourg built over 100 Class 52 locomotives. In 1945/46, a further 17 locomotives were added for the SNCF. There, the Class 52 was designated Class 150 Y. A special feature of the locomotives was the shorter chimney so as not to exceed the French loading gauge. The Class 150 Y hauled both heavy goods trains and passenger trains in the SNCF's eastern region. They were in service there until the end of the 1950s.
