Despite all the conversion work for railcars, DB Regio urgently needed modern, high-speed electric locomotives to pull double-decker trains up to 160 km/h in local transport. That is why a special version of the 145 class was ordered from manufacturer Bombardier for local transport, which was classified as the 146 class. The biggest difference to the 145 class is the hollow-shaft drive approved for 160 km/h instead of the axle-hung drive and the unmistakable train destination display. In the years 2001 to 2002, a total of 31 locomotives were delivered to DB Regio. The other series followed later.
