After the First World War, Austria was largely cut off from its coal deposits. Therefore, it was decided in the twenties at the BBÖ to electrify the main lines as fast as possible. The development of electric locomotives was still in its infancy at that time, but the designers of the Wiener Lokomotivfabrik and the BBC managed to strike lucky with the 1100 series. The locomotives were powered by drive rods which reminds us of the good old days of the steam locomotives. The locomotives had a very prominent stem and therefore it was quickly given the nickname "Crocodile". They were later designated as series 1189 and operated for the ÖBB for quite a long time.
