ÖBB-Double Stack Wagon - The “Weasel” on two levels. With the modernization of the entire vehicle stock starting in the middle of the 1990s the Österreichische Bundesbahnen (ÖBB) acquired all in all 324 modern double stack wagons which were put into service mostly in the greater Vienna area, in Niederösterreich and in the Burgenland. The product distinction "Wiesel" is supposed to signal to commuters that the rail is a viable alternative to the car and can compete in terms of speed just as much as in comfort. The wagons which offer room for up to 114 passengers are captivate with a unique two part grey red livery and on the inside with a factual elegance. In the guiding wagon is a multi functional compartment for bicycle transportation which makes the Wiesel trains also attractive for weekend tourists. In time these wagons are fitted with handicap compliant toilets and access ramps and a passenger information system is in the planning phase and awaits its realization. The modern vehicles are sometimes lined up in regular mass transit trains whereas most of the time they do push-pull train services with one control cab coach and seven center coaches. The maximum speed that can be reached is 140 km/h and in day to day service the series from the Taurus family can be seen more and more as the pulling locomotive. Together with the "City Shuttle" trains and the "Talent" railcar the "Wiesel" trains are the backbone of the modern mass transit in Austria and make more and more of a difference in the fight against overcrowded streets in the morning and evening rush hour traffic.
