Since the French railway network is split into a DC and a AC network, the SNCF, after a certain point, decided to buy only two-current system locomotives for their new vehicle program. The BB 22200, which was the first two-current locomotive to be delivered in series to the SNCF in 1976, was followed by 234 more locomotives of the series BB 26000 from 1988 on. The locomotive soon became known under the name “Sybic”, which was chosen for the terms “synchrone” (stands for synchronous motors) and “bicourant” (stands for two-current system capability). The “Sybic” locomotives are used in high-quality express trains, in regional trains as well as in the freight trains
from the division “FRET”.
