The series 1044 is an electric universal locomotive that perfectly matches with heavy express trains and goods trains which circulated in the lowlands as well as on mountain routes. At the time of commissioning, it was the most powerful four-axle electric locomotive in the world and, until the Taurus appeared, the absolute showpiece of the Austrian Federal Railways.
In April 1989, the company SGP-Graz delivered the 1044.201 to the ÖBB. The electrical concept was developed from the ABB. The 1044.201 is one of the five locomotives that were painted in the so-called "Chess board" design.
In the first half of the 1990s, the locomotive was retrofitted with longitudinal dampers on the bogies while in the second half of the 1990s square buffers were added. As with many locomotives in this series, the pantographs had different equipments.
