Il moderno Gruppo 23 "sopravvisse" al P8 prussiano che era destinato ad essere sostituito - solo per un anno. Aveva una potenza di 1314 kW (1785 CV), pesava 131,8 tonnellate e raggiungeva in marcia avanti una velocità massima di 110 km/ h e con tender davanti 85 km/h. Il 31 dicembre 1971, 76 locomotive formavano una parte essenziale del parco veicoli DB, senza eccezione, furono stazionate nei tre depositi ferroviari a Saarbrücken, Kaiserslautern e Crailsheim. Dopo il loro ritiro ufficiale nel dicembre 1975, 8 esemplari sono stati conservati per le prossime generazioni da associazioni e musei, in parte funzionanti.
