The order from DB Cargo for 200 units was the primary catalyst for the development of the TRAXX AC1, as the locomotive type was retrospectively designated in 2003. The designation TRAXX stands for for "Transnational Railway Applications with eXtreme fleXibility". The locomotive, derived directly from the 145 series but now with a modified design and series designation, was capable of utilisation for both the 15 kV/16 2/3 Hz and 25 kV/50 Hz AC voltage systems commonly employed in Europe. With a weight of 84 tonnes, it has a continuous output of 5.6 MW and is approved for 140 km/h.
