A total of 257 units of the class 1042 universal electric locomotive were built from 1963 onwards. After 1966, more powerful motors were installed to achieve a top speed of 150 km/h. These locomotives were designated as class 1042.5. Installing a resistance brake gave them their characteristic roof structures, and they were equipped with inverted single-arm pantographs. They were used to haul various types of trains, focusing on fast passenger and goods trains, including cross-border services to Germany.
The 1042.643 locomotive was built by Simmering-Graz-Pauker in Graz and had the factory number 71118. ELIN supplied the electrical equipment. The ÖBB acceptance test took place in January 1975. Before its general overhaul on 30 April 1992, the locomotive was fitted with a HG-box in the Valousek design.
