At the end of the Second World War, 386 class 86 locomotives were on West German territory. Most of them could be repaired, so by 1952, the DB had 378 locomotives in its fleet. In addition to the classic branch line trains, they were regularly used to haul express trains and for shunting in freight yards. The last DB locomotives were withdrawn from service in 1974 and designated class 086.
