The 4 axle Diesel locomotive series 218 were for a long time the most important and most frequent Diesel mainline locomotives of the German Bundesbahn. Starting in 1971, 398 locomotives were mass produced were built in 4 lots. They were in service infront of all kind of passenger trains and freigth trains throughout West Germany. With its power output of 2.800 PS the locomotive reached a top speed of 140 km/h. It was multi-traction capable and ready for the use on rails. Later on some of the machines were equipped with push pull drives. Over the course of time the locomotives were painted in various liveries, starting with purple when they were first delivered followed by ocean blue-beige and oriental red and ending up with the current traffic red. It was only at the end of the last milenium that the peak time of the series 218 was over and the machines were decommissioned.

The 4 axle Diesel locomotive series 218 were for a long time the most important and most frequent Diesel mainline locomotives of the German Bundesbahn. Since 1971 they circulated as passenger trains and freight trains in all parts of Western Germany: on two-track mainlines, in double traction service infront of express trains and also on branchlines pulling local trains. It was only at the end of the last milenium that the peak time of the series 218 and its sub series was over. They were replaced by the Diesel rail coaches and the new mainline locomotives which intruded the teritory of the series 218.

The 398 series locomotives were built in 4 lots during 1971 and 1979. The companies Krupp, Henschel, Krauss-Maffei and MAK were responsible for the design and the construction of the machines. The first 12 pre-production series left the factory halls of the company Krupp in Essesn already in 1968 when they were still registered as the V 164 - in that way Krupp wanted to document the affiliations to the V 160 product group. In the course of time little modifications were made on some of the construction lots so increased for example the original power output from 2.500 to 2.800 PS.

All locomotives reached a top speed of 140 km/h. They were multi-traction capable and capable on routes with steep inclines. The locomotives of the last buiding series were equipped with a push pull control. Over the course of time the locomotives were painted in various liveries, starting with purple when they were first delivered followed by ocean blue-beige and oriental red and ending up with the current traffic red. There were and still are locomotives in the TEE-livery red and beige, in Citybahn-livery, or in the current yellow of the DB Gleisbau.
